Momme Count

Definition

The weight measurement for silk fabric. One momme (mm) = the weight in pounds of a piece of silk 45 inches wide and 100 yards long. Practical ranges: 12–15 mm (light, lingerie grade), 19 mm (standard quality minimum), 22 mm (luxury benchmark), 25 mm+ (bedding grade). Higher momme = denser weave, more durable, more opaque, better drape.

Why it matters for dupe shopping

The 19 mm minimum rule: any silk garment below 19 mm becomes sheer in direct sunlight and begins pilling within 10–15 washes. LilySilk and Cuyana use 22 mm Grade 6A silk — the luxury benchmark. Quince uses 17 mm charmeuse — noticeably thinner when held to light. For a silk blouse or dress worn as outerwear, always verify momme count before purchasing.
